For nearly a century, WHEMCO and it's predecessor-The Mesta Machine Company- have provided high-quality machining, milling, and engineering services to the steel and metalworking industries. Today, in the Midland Foundry, WHEMCO applies the same quality and service standards to all phases of production of cast mill rolls.

WHEMCO's Midland foundry has an unmatched capability for producing quality rolls in a broad range of types and sizes. This capability is founded on extensive modern equipment and the accumulated skills of craftsmen who have the experience to understand the customer's needs and the know-how to produce rolls that match those needs precisely.

Depending on roll size and customer requirements, rolls may be heat treated and finish machined at the Midland plant and/or WHEMCO's plant in West Homestead, Pennsylvania, which offers the use of North America's largest and latest-design Selas Furnace. The heat-treating equipment and techniques of the two facilities afford WHEMCO the ability to respond to a broad range of customer requirements for high-quality rolls. The combined engineering, casting, heat-treating, machining and finishing facilities of the two plants produce the finest cast rolls available- the result of nearly a century of casting and rollmaking experience.

Proprietary  up-hill teeming foundry technology permits direct chill casting of back-up rolls in metal-to-metal contact with the moid.  This technique achieves accelerated solidification rates for enhanced chemical homogeneity that was previously unattainable with traditional roll making in sand-lined moids.

The superior quality of the roll barrel structure enables WHEMCO to apply aggressive rotary flash heat treatment for precise, uniform hardening.   Specially designed high velocity burners austenitize the work surface of the roll barrel for decremental water spray quenching.

Roll Shop Service

High performance back-up rolls require particular roll shop care to detect and eliminate damage caused by rolling service abuse. WHEMCO applications engineers can customize roll maintenance and NDE practices to address specific mill service criteria.

WHEMCO's capabilities also include bearing conversion and remanufacturing of both good quality cast and forged rolls using advanced rotary heat treatment equipment.  Roll repairs, retrofit and welding are performed to the same exacting quality standards that apply to new roll production.  The economics and established performance record of WHEMCO back-up rolls are the proven standard among North America's sheet, strip, and plate producers.
